The Casino RSM Bulls were nothing if not entertaining in their loss to Southern Cross University on the weekend. In a game that featured a combined 10 tries, the vocal Casino travelling supporters were able to view some great attacking rugby from both sides. The Bulls required 10 minutes to switch on at the start of the match and the Gold Rats took full advantage by laying on 2 quick tries. Following some determined forward play, Casino made their way into university territory and Cale berry was able to put his blinding pace to work down the touchline for Casino’s first try.
University were able to take full advantage of their leverage at the scrum and secured a lion’s share of possession, going in at halftime with the lead 17-5. After a stern halftime discussion, the Bulls came out with some physicality after half time and attempted to belt the Students into submission. The forwards kept it tight and made easy metres with a strong mauling game that led to tries by Jarrad Cameron and Tim Gould. This was in contrast to Uni who were able to pounce on Casino errors and score some enterprising tries using their potent counter attack. Although University were the victors, Casino never relented and Joey Radin scored a try right on full time. Points went to: Justin Zaiko 1, Cale Berry 2, Jarrad Cameron 3 and Players Player.
Reserve grade agonizingly went down by one point to Uni’s Reserve Grade side at Maurie Ryan Oval on Saturday. The 35-34 scoreline was reflective of the attacking display put on by both sides in an entertaining fixture. Casino threw the ball all over the park and ran hard through the middle as the lead changed hands numerous times. The side was boosted by a number of under 19 players, who, without a game on the day were able to gain some valuable experience in the senior ranks. The Reservists proved once again that they can match it with any side in the competition and that, with a better attendance at training would be able to turn many of their losses into victories. Veteran Dan McDonald got 1 point, Barnstorming Lock Percy Ziegenfusz 2, and the versatile Dan Klein taking the 3.
Although both senior grades are out of finals contention, improved attendance at training will be to the benefit of the club and the players. The under 19 side is still in finals contention and are sure to do well going forward. Next home game is the 31st of July against Grafton followed by the Illustrious Casino Rugby Club Trivia Night. Numbers are limited so ensure you are there at 6pm sharp for nominations.
