Hollywood_trophyThe Casino RSM Bulls have managed to put a bright spot in a lackluster season by defeating the Grafton Red Men 41-17 to retain the Craig ‘Hollywood’ Nicholls trophy. This perpetual trophy is played for by Casino and Grafton each year. The Casino men showed some real club spirit, with many first graders pulling on a reserve grade jumper prior to their own game to fill in due to lack of numbers.

The first grade win was marked by some spectacular tries, which were the result of a smothering defense. Hard man Tim Gould picked up one score as a product of some enterprising lineout play by the tight forwards and Captain Luke Serone tallied 2 which went the length of the field and Lachlan Winkler ran in his maiden first grade try after he charged down a kick and re – gathered, while Cameron Davis powered over the line on his first touch of the ball. Although Grafton put up little resistance, Casino showed some discipline by sticking to their game plan and playing out the full 80 instead of relaxing once they had attained a big lead. In a high scoring game, the tight forwards laid a firm platform for the backs to attack from, retaining the lions share of possession. Although the Bulls are now out of finals contention, this effort shows that there cans till be some positive aspects taken from the remainder of the season.

Reserve Grades woes continued as they were put to the sword by Grafton. Lacking players and fielding a number of out of position first grade players, the Reservists were unable to score a point in the 80 minutes. Percy Ziegenfusz continued his good run of form with some strong runs through the middle. Old stager Lofty Carroll tried hard in the scrums while Dean Watson held the backline together. The Reserve Graders are capable of giving most sides a run for their money, but attendance at training needs to be improved.

The Under 19 side put in a audacious effort to topple second placed Grafton, continuing their strong run towards the semi finals. The team is the sole peremiership hope remaining at the club, and with most of their players having proved their ability in the senior grades, they are looking to be strong contenders. The Young Bulls lie in 5th spot on the log, with two games in hand, which if they win, would cement a semi final position. The under 19 backline was back to its polished best with prodigious five-eigth Lachlan Winkler returning from representative duties to steer the team to victory. This side is yet to reach their full potential, and look poised to make a strong challenge for the premiership.

Following the matches on the day, the First Annual CRUFC Triva Night was a great success with nearly 100 people turning out for the contest, which was taken out by “Stagnetti’s Revenge” who graciously donated their prize money back to the club. A big thank you to all who attended, the organizers and the people who volunteered their time to make the night a hit.
