A reminder to owners and occupiers of buildings where water-cooling systems and warm-water systems are installed, to ensure that these systems are registered with Council.

The Public Health Act 1991 and the Public Health (Microbial Control) Regulation 2000 contain important provisions in relation to the installation and maintenance of certain types of water-cooling and warm water systems. The purpose is to prevent, or inhibit the growth of microorganisms, such as Legionella, which can cause Legionnaires’ disease.

Water-cooling systems (cooling towers) are associated with larger scale air conditioning plants and industrial process coolers. Warm-water systems, such as thermostatic mixing valves (but not tempering valves), produce warm water to a temperature of about 43.5°C and are commonly found in childcare centres, hairdressers, hotels and motels.

Penalties of up to $1,100 apply for failing to comply and building owners and occupiers are urged to check that any such systems on their premises have been registered with Local Council.

For further advice, please contact Council’s Environmental Health section on 6660 0290.
